Clitoria ternatea: A Tropical Beauty with Medicinal Effects

Clitoria (Clitoria) is a genus of plants from the legume family (Fabaceae), known primarily for the species Clitoria ternatea, commonly referred to in Slovak as butterfly pea or butterfly-shaped clitoria. The name of the genus is derived from the female genital organ (clitoris), reflecting the shape of the flower – this was originally the intention of botanist Carl Linnaeus, who chose the name based on visual similarity.

🌸 History and Origin:

  • Origin: Clitoria originates from the tropical regions of Asia, especially India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where it has long been cultivated not only for its beauty but also for its medicinal and culinary properties.
  • Traditional Uses:
    • In Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, clitoria is used to enhance memory, reduce stress, and as a natural aphrodisiac.
    • The flowers are used as a natural dye – in Thailand and Vietnam, they are used to make blue tea (known as butterfly pea tea), which changes color depending on the pH.
  • Colonial Period: During the colonial expansion, the plant was brought to Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, where it adapted as an ornamental plant and later also as a soil-protective and nitrogen-fixing species.

🌿 Interesting Facts:

  • Clitoria has intensely blue flowers, less commonly white or purple.
  • It is a climbing perennial, popular in gardens for its fast growth and vibrant color.
  • In modern times, it is becoming popular in gastronomy (colorful drinks, cocktails, desserts) and in cosmetics for its antioxidant content.
